Common Vision Problems
01:33
Learn about the causes and symptoms of common vision problems.
When your eye is too long, light rays focus in front of the retina producing a blurred image. This is called myopia or nearsightedness. If you have myopia you are able to see close objects more clearly than objects that are far away. When your eye is too short in relation to the curvature of your cornea, light rays entering your eye focus beyond the retina also producing a blurred image. This is called hyperopia or farsightedness. If you have hyperopia you can see distant objects more clearly than objects that are close to you. With an astigmatism your eye is shaped more like a football than a perfect sphere. Incoming light focuses on multiple points instead of one. People with a high degree of astigmatism have blurred vision for near and distant objects. Between the ages of 40 and 50 it is normal to lose the ability to focus on close objects. This condition is called presbyopia and it develops as the lens of your eye loses flexibility. This loss of muscle tone prevents light rays from bending properly causing blurred close up vision. Presbyopia cannot be corrected at this time. However, a possible option could be Monovision.
